What is meditation?

Meditation is a way of working with the mind and body which can provide a wide variety of benefits, such as:

  • Letting go of knee-jerk reactivity to stress and learning to rest in the present moment
  • Getting in touch with your emotions and healing past traumas
  • Opening the heart and finding deep inner resources of love and compassion for yourself and the people around you
  • Exploring the different roles you play in life, and seeing that these facets of the self are not truly fixed or confining in the way that they can sometimes feel
  • Finding a sense of grounding and resilience that helps you to weather the storms life throws at you
  • Discovering a source of inner well-being which nobody can take away from you
  • Opening the door to deeper insights into the nature of yourself, your mind and your experience which can lead to a profound sense of freedom and joy

If you've never meditated before, it's easy to get started! For a quick-start guide to mindfulness - one of the most popular practices around today - check out the Mindfulness page. I also offer a free e-book, Pathways of Meditation, which contains a self-guided introductory course in mindfulness and several other types of meditation, as well as lots of other helpful information.

If that all seems too daunting, you can dip a toe in the water by sampling some of the articles in the Writings section and the guided meditations on the Audio page.

You're also very welcome to get in touch if you'd like to talk it over in more detail!
